Unlike older side firing sensors, the modern smartmicro radars use multiple forward firing beams which has many advantages. Vehicles remain inside the field of view for much longer, their position and speed vectors are measured with higher accuracy, and a better classification is achieved. smartmicro radar sensors are the only technology available on the market today that supports precise trajectory tracking of vehicles. Due to their high coverage, vehicle positions can be tracked for up to 300m and over a 100-degree field of view.
Looking along the road, the mounting position is more flexible. On the roadside, at the corner of an intersection, at the median of a highway or on a gantry, whatever sensor position: forward firing provides the best coverage.
Existing infrastructure like traffic light poles or street light poles can be used. Other than for obsolete side-firing radars which usually need a very high mounting position, moderate heights are sufficient. Since vehicles are tracked over a longer period when they drive in the field of view, occlusion rarely happens.

4D/UHD radar technology enables to separate objects by speed, range and azimuth angle and to measure elevation angles.
For reliable detection and control of the traffic flow at intersections, typically up to four radar sensors are installed. Those can be operated free of any mutual interference. However, with other, mainly automotive radar sensors in the same area, interference could result in reduced sensitivity and detection range. This may lead to inaccurate traffic detection, which can affect the safety of all road users.
Thus, all smartmicro radar models have integrated interference mitigation. A special algorithm detects and suppresses the interference adaptively. This reliably filters out any false detections and significantly improves the detection rate in scenarios with high interference levels. Also, the interference level is reported as diagnosis information.
Since many roads are not straight, smartmicro traffic radars support any shape a road may have: not by approximating the road shape with many short straight sections, but by elegantly bending the virtual lanes – just as the real road is shaped.

For an integration of our radars into intersection controllers smartmicro provides several interface options: smartmicro offers cabinet interface cards, which can be installed in any TS1/TS2 detector rack or 170 input file.
All smartmicro sensors feature physical RS485, CAN and 10/100 Ethernet interfaces. smartmicro also offer general-purpose relay modules, that are directly attached to the back side of the sensor or located in the cabinet. Eight output channels per approach can be wired to any controller accepting relay or loop detector inputs.
smartmicro radar sensors can either stream precise real-time traffic data to an operations center or collect it for statistics. Being the only multi-lane counting sensors that can be gantry-mounted, smartmicro radars are the perfect fit for fixed (permanent) or mobile (temporary) traffic counting stations.
Traffic data including counting and classification (Forward+) of seven classes on highways or freeways can be used to enhance safety or to manage maintenance of roadways efficiently. With very precise speed vectors and object classification covering up to eight lanes (dual direction), our sensors deliver excellent data for highway performance monitoring and reporting – on demand or for pre-defined time periods. Lane-specific traffic statistics include the parameters volume or class, occupancy, average speed, 85th percentile speed, headway and gap.
Featuring the most advanced ultra-high definition (4D/UHD) technology our radar sensors enable direct measurement of range, speed and azimuth angle (lane position) of all vehicles in real-time – even in complex conditions.
Due to the forward-firing principle our radars detect and report wrong-way driving and sudden speed or lane changes immediately, which are often an indication for possible incidents. With the smartmicro Event Trigger Module, zones of interest can be defined and combined with a specific event. If, for example, a car stops in the middle of a road or at a hard shoulder, the sensor can send a trigger message.
Additionally, with our sensors on- and off-ramps can be adaptively controlled or monitored since smartmicro radars can measure the demand and the capacity simultaneously.
smartmicro technology enables built-in double redundant speed measurement with four or more receive antennas, direct Doppler measurement and range rate measurement. Multiple independent receiving antennas enable that only perfectly matching speed values are reported. In addition, our radar sensors independently measure speed by Doppler shift and by range progress over time to ensure highest measurement quality. All our sensors are certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology METAS for enforcement applications – certificates are available on request.
For best-in-class red-light enforcement our radar sensors can cover up to six lanes and track up to 256 objects simultaneously in a 100-degree field of view. Since smartmicro sensors provide high performance even at short distances, they can be installed behind or in front of the stop bar (approaching or receding). Additionally, our integrated Event Trigger Module allows for multiple trigger lines inside the field of view and for combining them with defined events/trigger signals.

smartmicro radars can also be applied for mobile 4D object tracking out of police cars, no matter if the vehicle is driving or stopped at the roadside. With our enforcement sensors, the speed of multiple vehicles driving on three or more lanes in front of or behind a police car can be measured. By connecting two smartmicro sensors the front and rear area around a police car can be monitored simultaneously.
The optimization of traffic flow is one of the most important aspects for smart cities. smartmicro enables truly smart and highly efficient traffic management.By reliably detecting all traffic, our sensors measure queue lengths precisely and provide real-time object data or big data for traffic statistics. This data is fed to local intersection controllers for direct local adaptive traffic control. Traffic data are then transmitted to a Traffic Operation Center (TOC) and enable optimum traffic flow.
Real-time object data can also be directly transmitted from an intersection to connected vehicles via Car2X wireless transmission. This is rated as one of the key drivers for connected, autonomously driving cars.
smartmicro introduces a brand-new system combining radar technology and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I or, more generally, V2X) communication. In the future, connected vehicles will communicate among each other and broadcast important information, improving the traffic significantly.
We establish a solution that generates V2X messages to be received by connected vehicles based on real-time data collected from our traffic radars. Lane-specific data provided by our sensors are converted into appropriate coordinates (WGS84 standard), speed, heading etc. for all traffic objects – including pedestrians, cyclists and heavy trucks. The system then broadcasts corresponding messages – in this case Infrastructure-to-Vehicle (I2V) messages.
smartmicro sensors detect and classify pedestrians and cyclists. Connected vehicles receiving V2X messages can literally “see around the corner” into other legs of the intersection. This avoids accidents and protects vulnerable road users (VRUs), such as pedestrians and cyclists, since drivers can notice them even before they are detected by on-board sensors.
Adaptive traffic light control at any type of intersection helps to avoid traffic jams or congested streets, reduces travel times. This in turn, results in CO2 reduction and enhances road safety.

The TMC Installation Wizard simplifies the planning and field installation of our radar sensors with an intuitive step-by-step guide. The configuration includes site planning, sensor selection and configuration as well as physically installing the radar at an intersection. With one simple window for settings, and a map for better visualization, the TMC explains all user-friendly settings. It provides unique features such as “local awareness” and “guided alignment”, with which our sensors directly provide feedback to the installer about where it is mounted and how well it is physically aligned to cover the area of interest.
