What Is MxActivitySensor ONE and Why Does On-Camera Analytics Matter?

Most video surveillance systems generate alerts based on pixel changes in the image. Something moves, the system flags it. The problem is that wind, rain, shadows, shifting light, animals, and vegetation all cause pixel changes too. The result is a flood of false alarms that operators either spend hours reviewing or, more commonly, learn to ignore.

MxActivitySensor ONE takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of reacting to pixel movement, it uses AI-based object classification to identify people and vehicles specifically. Only confirmed objects trigger events. Everything else is filtered out before it becomes a notification.

How it works

MxActivitySensor ONE runs directly on the camera’s processor. There is no external server involved, no cloud connection required, and no dependency on network bandwidth to perform the analysis. The camera captures the image, classifies objects in real time, and applies event logic locally.

The detection capabilities include motion detection, loitering detection, directional filtering, and object-type filtering (people vs vehicles). Each of these can be configured independently per sensor channel. On a dual-sensor camera like the MOBOTIX S ONE Dual, that means two completely separate analytics tasks running in parallel without affecting frame rates.

This is worth emphasising: both channels maintain up to 30 frames per second while running analytics simultaneously. There is no switching, no prioritisation, and no frame rate reduction.

Why edge processing matters

In a traditional architecture, video streams are sent across the network to a central server for analysis. This creates three dependencies: network bandwidth to carry the full stream, server capacity to process it, and software licences for each analytics channel.

When the analytics run on the camera itself, those dependencies disappear. The camera only sends relevant event data and video clips across the network, rather than continuous full-resolution streams. This reduces bandwidth consumption, removes the need for dedicated analytics servers, and means the system keeps working even during network interruptions. Events are still logged locally on the camera’s internal storage (up to 2TB on the S ONE Dual) and can be retrieved once connectivity is restored.

For remote or distributed sites, this architecture is particularly valuable. A mine site with 40 cameras across a large area, or a transport fleet with cameras in individual vehicles, benefits significantly from analytics that don’t depend on a constant, high-bandwidth link back to a central system.

No licence fees, no per-channel costs

MxActivitySensor ONE is included as standard on all MOBOTIX ONE cameras. There are no additional licence purchases, no annual renewals, and no per-channel fees.

This matters at scale. A site with 50 cameras running server-based analytics often faces five-figure annual licence costs just for the analytics layer. With MxActivitySensor ONE, the analytics capability is built into the camera purchase price. Adding more cameras to the system doesn’t increase your analytics software bill.

It also simplifies procurement. There’s no separate analytics vendor to evaluate, no compatibility matrix to manage, and no licence server to maintain.

Where it fits

MxActivitySensor ONE is best suited to applications where you need reliable detection of people and vehicles with minimal false alarms. Perimeter security, access control zones, after-hours intrusion detection, loading bays, and car parks are all strong use cases.

It’s not designed for advanced behavioural analytics, facial recognition, or licence plate reading. MOBOTIX offers a separate certified app ecosystem for those requirements.
