The Moxa TCF-142 is an RS-232/422/485 to fibre media converter that extends serial transmission distances up to 40 km using single-mode fibre. The TCF-142 supports RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 (2-wire and 4-wire) serial interfaces and can be configured for either RS-232 or RS-422/485 — but not both simultaneously. Automatic baudrate detection and ADDC for RS-485 simplify installation. Ring topology is supported, allowing fibre rings with a total circumference of up to 100 km.
The TCF-142-S-SC uses single-mode fibre (G.652 single-mode) with SC connectors. Typical transmission wavelength is 1310 nm, with a link budget of 20 dB and 1 dB dispersion penalty. TX optical power range is 0 to -5 dBm; RX range is 0 to -25 dBm.
Two serial ports are provided via 7-pin terminal block. The converter handles RS-232 (TxD, RxD, GND) or RS-422/485 — configured by DIP switch, not simultaneously. RS-422 supports Tx+/Tx-/Rx+/Rx-/GND; RS-485 4-wire Tx+/Tx-/Rx+/Rx-/GND; RS-485 2-wire Data+/Data-/GND. Pull high/low resistors (1 kΩ / 150 kΩ) and three termination options are user-selectable.
Powered via terminal block at 12 to 48 VDC, drawing 70–140 mA. Reverse polarity and overload protection are built in. The TCF-142-S-SC-T wide-temperature variant operates from -40 to 75°C, suitable for outdoor enclosures and harsh industrial environments. Ambient humidity tolerance is 5 to 95% non-condensing. Metal IP30 housing, 320 g.
