Distributed industrial sites generate data at the edge. Sensors, meters, serial instruments, and field devices all produce information that needs to be collected, processed, and sent upstream to SCADA, historians, or cloud platforms. The question is what does the computing at the edge, and whether it can survive the environment it’s deployed in.
The Moxa UC-1222A is a compact, DIN-rail mounted Arm-based computer built specifically for this role. It sits at the edge of an industrial network, handles data acquisition from field devices, and communicates upstream over Ethernet or cellular. It’s small, low-power, wide-temperature rated, and runs a long-term supported industrial Linux OS.

The UC-1222A is built around an Arm Cortex-A53 dual-core 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz, with 2 GB DDR4 RAM and 16 GB eMMC storage. It runs Moxa Industrial Linux (MIL), a Debian-based operating system with long-term support through to 2031.
The I/O set covers the basics that most field deployments need: two Gigabit Ethernet ports for network connectivity, two RS-232/422/485 serial ports for connecting legacy instruments and PLCs, one USB 2.0 port, and a micro SD slot for expanded storage. An mPCIe expansion slot with a nano SIM tray allows cellular connectivity via an LTE module, which is critical for sites without fixed network infrastructure. Two SMA antenna connectors are provided for wireless module attachment.
The whole unit measures just 101 x 27 x 128 mm and weighs 224 grams. It draws between 4.5W and 7.2W, mounts on standard DIN rail, and operates from -40°C to +60°C without fans or moving parts. It carries ATEX Zone 2 and Class I Division 2 certifications for hazardous area deployments, plus a TPM v2.0 chip for hardware-based security.
This is where the UC-1222A diverges from general-purpose single-board computers. Moxa Industrial Linux includes a crash-free overlay filesystem that protects against data corruption during unexpected power loss, integrated network failover management, and compliance with IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2 requirements.
The support commitment is significant. MIL’s current release (Debian 11, kernel 5.10) is supported through 2031, with security patches and bug fixes throughout. In OT environments, edge devices are expected to run reliably for the operational life of the assets they serve. A platform with a two-year OS lifecycle creates ongoing maintenance burden and security exposure. MIL’s long-term patching model aligns with how utilities, resources companies, and infrastructure operators actually plan and budget.
For developers and integrators, the Debian base means familiar tooling. If you can work with Ubuntu or Raspberry Pi OS, you can work with MIL. The difference is that MIL is hardened for production deployment rather than prototyping.
The UC-1222A is well suited to applications where you need a small, reliable edge computer to bridge field devices and upstream systems. Common deployments include BESS sites (aggregating data from inverters and battery management systems), substations and distribution monitoring, remote environmental and process sensing, and transport infrastructure.
It also works as a protocol conversion platform, translating between serial field instruments (Modbus RTU, DNP3) and Ethernet-based control systems. The dual serial ports and dual Ethernet ports give integrators enough connectivity for most single-site data acquisition architectures without needing additional hardware.
The UC-1222A is the entry point in Moxa’s UC Series of Arm-based industrial computers.
If your application requires more processing power, built-in wireless connectivity, or expanded I/O, the range scales up:
The UC-2200A Series adds a quad-core processor and additional serial ports. The UC-3400A Series introduces built-in LTE and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity without requiring separate expansion modules. The UC-4400A Series is the top of the range, with 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, CAN bus, and digital I/O for the most demanding mobile and industrial applications.
All models run Moxa Industrial Linux and share the same management tooling, so applications developed on the UC-1222A can move to a higher-spec model without a rewrite.
